UPDATE – For Small Businesses
If you landed here looking for Canada Carbon Rebate For Small Businesses announced in October 2024, please head over to this blog post dedicated to this topic. The discussion below is for the Canada Carbon Rebate (Climate Action Incentive) Payments for Individuals.
What Are Climate Action Incentive Payments (CAIP) aka Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR)?
Climate Action Incentive Payments (CAIP), now known as the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) are Canada’s approach to motivate citizens towards a greener lifestyle. By financially rewarding actions that reduce carbon emissions, this initiative complements the country’s environmental policies.
Who Gets the Climate Action Incentive Rebate?
Every eligible Canadian, including families and individuals across urban and rural areas, can benefit from this program.
When Do We Get the Climate Action Incentive Rebate in 2024?
In 2024, the CCR payment dates will depend on when you file your personal tax return.
For the April 15, 2024 payment, you must file your 2023 personal tax return electronically by March 15, 2024. If you file after March 15, the April payment will be issued later, once your return has been assessed. Both spouses or common-law partners need to file to qualify for the household-based CCR payment.
Generally, payment dates fall on:
- January 15
- April 15
- July 15
- October 15
These payments are made quarterly to support Canadians in offsetting the cost of carbon pricing.
How Much Can You Expect to Receive?
The rebate for the climate action incentive payment amount varies by province, family size, and whether you’re in a rural or urban setting, aimed at fairly compensating for carbon pricing costs.
For example, in Alberta, an individual receives $193, a second adult $96.50, and each child $48.25. Thus, a family of four in Alberta could expect $386 (first adult) + $96.50 (second adult) + $96.50 (first child in a single-parent family) + $48.25 (additional child) = $627.25 per quarter.
Rural vs. Metropolitan Areas
Residents in rural areas are eligible for a 10% supplement to the base amount. This is to recognize the higher costs associated with energy needs in rural communities. In Prince Edward Island, this rural supplement is automatically applied to all residents.
Applying for the Climate Action Incentive
There’s no separate application process. Eligibility is determined through your annual tax return with the CRA.
